Hi, my name is Sylvia Williams.
I grew up in southeast Kansas in an idyllic rural community. Things were simpler back then. In the summer, I played softball and swam at the community swimming pool. I was active in my local church and played the organ at church service on occasion. That small town taught me the power of kindness, caring and compassion. If someone in our community needed help, people banded together and made sure they got it.
The Third Congressional District is very similar. As a fifth generation Kansan, I understand what is important to Kansas families. Our community wants simple things: safe and quality schools for all students, good job opportunities, access to excellent health care, and a secure retirement for our seniors. They seem like such practical things, but they get lost in the rhetoric of who wins and who loses in Washington D.C.
Personally, I am thankful for my loving family. I have a kind and supportive husband who is my true partner and best friend. We have a very special daughter who is funny and creative. She loves community activities which include tee ball, tumbling, and Girl Scouts. I serve as a scout leader and reading program volunteer in the Blue Valley School District. Through our church, I volunteer with youth activities, multiple women’s groups, and I usher at Sunday services.
I am running for Congress because I have the background and experience to provide new and innovative ideas. I graduated from Pittsburg State University with a degree in accounting in 1988 and then the University of Missouri-Kansas City with a MBA in Finance. For 29 years, I worked for financial institutions that focused on making their customer a priority and were dedicated to helping them achieve their goals. I served in senior management positions and supervised highly experienced staffs that focused on customer service. Using my financial experience, I know I can be a part of creating solutions, rather than creating roadblocks.
I think a congressional district as special as ours deserves someone who will represent all facets of our community: maintaining access to excellent health care, providing safe quality public schools for our children, supporting women and embracing diversity.
